Other types of quarts in a liter

There are 3 different variations of quarts (discussed below in this article). In the US, US liquid quarts are the most commonly used to measure liquids.

One liter is equal to 1.057 US liquid quarts, 0.91 US dry quarts, and 0.88 imperial quarts.

What is a liter?

A liter is equal to 1.057 quarts and 33.814 fluid ounces. It is part of the metric system and it measures volume (meaning how much space a substance takes up).

This measurement unit was introduced during the French Revolution and was initially defined in 1795 as one cubic decimeter. The definition was later revised in 1901 to denote the volume occupied by one kilogram of pure water at its maximum density. However, in 1964, the original definition of one cubic decimeter was brought back.

What is a quart?

A quart is equal to 0.946 liters and 32 US fluid ounces.

The quart is a unit of measure of volume and is part of the imperial system. The term “quart” is derived from the Latin word “Quartus,” meaning one-quarter. For liquids, this means one-quarter of a gallon.

Usually, in the US, when we talk about a quart we are referring to US liquid quart. However, there are three different variations which are used in different regions and for different purposes.

1. US liquid quart

This is used to measure liquids in the US. One US liquid quart is equal to 0.946 liters, 946.353 milliliters, 32 US fluid ounces, and 1/4th of a US gallon.

2. US dry quart

This is used to measure dry ingredients in the US. The US dry quart is larger than the liquid quart, measuring 1.10122 liters.

3. Imperial quart

This is also known as the UK quart. It is used in other countries which use the imperial system. The imperial quart is larger than both the US liquid and dry quarts. An imperial quart is equal to 1.13652 liters.

Quarts vs liters

How are the liters and quarts different? Although they both are mainly used to measure the volume of liquids, they are not part of the same measurement system.

The liters are part of the metric system which is widely used while the quarts are part of the imperial or British system which is used in a few countries. In addition, one US liquid quart is slightly smaller than one liter.
